In recent reports, a frequent flyer with a one-million-plus pile of miles/points made news—but not in the way one might think. This frequent flyer, Jim Kennedy, is homeless and living in hotels with his stockpile of points. At the time of the ABC news report, he’d been living off his points for about two months and figured that he had three more months of points left as he looks for work, driving up and down California, and looking for hotels with free Internet and breakfast among other amenities. He also takes advantage of cash and points deals such as Starwood’s where he can get a stay for 1,600 points and $30. He reportedly has about 85,000 points with Starwood Preferred Guest, 400,000 points with Hilton Honors, 100,000 miles with Delta SkyMiles, 120,000 miles with American AAdvantage, 200,000 miles with United Mileage Plus and 125,000 American Express Membership Rewards points. Kennedy said that he never thought his life would become constantly checking in and out of hotels. “I kind of did when I was on the road,” he said, “but at least I had a place to come home to.” You can follow Kennedy through Twitter by searching HomelessThomOC.
