Lufthansa Miles & More App
[Feb 2010 Issue]

Lufthansa has introduced a new social networking app for frequent flyers called MemberScout that allows you to communicate with other travelers. The app will show you other members currently using the app and their distance from you. So, for example, you can see if another MemberScout user is at the airport during a long layover and arrange to meet up and share your all-important frequent flyer tips. You can also access the taxi-sharing function to see if anyone nearby would be interested in sharing a taxi or you can ask fellow travelers for tips about things to do at your destination. Miles & More members can register with their membership number and PIN to access a version of the app that reflects their status and includes the latest program news and partner specials. Lufthansa_USA Twitter is a touch away and there is an area for polls (empty when we visited). There is also a feedback screen to let Lufthansa know how they’re doing with the app. You can download a free preview version of the Lufthansa Miles & More MemberScout app for the Apple iPhone or iPod touch via iTunes or your mobile device. An app for Blackberry is in the works.

When we signed up for our free app, we were greeted with “100+ Scouts found” including our own, Randy Petersen, but only four “Scouts” were actually online at the time we were. One Scout, Norne, had this to say, “I love the Star Alliance lounge at Heathrow! Met somebody there via the app, it works!” There is also a FlyerTalk group so you can keep up with fellow FTers.

Bottom line: This looks to be a well-thought-out app for Miles & More frequent flyers. But be aware that when you sign up you are asked for your year of birth, which is displayed publicly for all the other “Scouts” to see. If you want to go all out with this app, you can link your other social network accounts in your profile, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Flickr. In future versions of the app, features from myskystatus.com will be available, such as the ability to automatically send status updates to your Facebook and Twitter accounts with your flight departure, location and arrival information.
